When considering the purchase of goods and services, we recommend reaching out to these UBC prequalified suppliers.

These prequalified suppliers have been awarded a contract by Procurement Services for use by all departments and faculties at UBC. Here are some of the benefits you will receive when you use a prequalified supplier:

  • Delivers best overall value to the University based on price, quality, and delivery capabilities, training, and ease of ordering;
  • Reduces contractual risks as UBC has the capability to better hold these vendors accountable for below-standard service delivery;
  • Favorable contractual terms and conditions;
  • Establishes clear conflict resolution processes;
  • Improves access to information; and
  • Saves time and effort as the (second stage) competitive process required for purchasing goods and services greater than $75,000 (CAD) through these suppliers has been streamlined.

Couriers

When using couriers, reduce your carbon footprint by exploring the various ways to ship your items more sustainably.

Choosing a courier that embraces sustainability will not only reduce the footprint of your shipment but will also encourage other couriers to improve their sustainability practices.

Business Travel

UBC measures and reports emissions from business travel as part of our Climate Action Plan. Choose lower carbon travel methods to help us reach our climate goals.

UBC staff and faculty flights generate approximately 15,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions each year and are one of the most significant emissions sources for our university.

Appliances

When buying or upgrading appliances, choose energy efficient models, consider refurbished models, and share or centralize appliances with other offices in your building.

If you have an old refrigerator or freezer, check the energy consumption rating and consider replacing it with a new, energy efficient model.

Batteries

Reducing your battery use, using rechargeable batteries, and recycling batteries responsibly can reduce your environmental impact.

Batteries often contain potentially harmful heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium. In 2014, Call2Recycle estimates around 2,250 tonnes of batteries were sent to the landfill in BC alone. Disposing of batteries as regular trash has raised concerns over soil contamination and water pollution.

General Office Supplies

Purchasing office supplies only when needed, and choosing sustainable products, can help improve your office's environmental impact and bottom line.

When purchasing office supplies, choose items that are refillable and recyclable and contain a high percentage of recycled content materials. Consider whether or not a product is really necessary, or if a system can be set up to facilitate the reuse of office supplies and avoid over-ordering products.

Printing

Adopting eco-friendly printing practices and using supplies wisely can help to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of printing.

Over 350 million printing supplies, such as ink and toner cartridges, are discarded into North American landfills each year, and can take from 450 to 1,000 years to decompose. Producing ink cartridges is also very energy intensive. Manufacturing a single new ink cartridge uses approximately one litre of oil.
